The New York Times keeps putting the video behind their pay-only wall, but it’s up on YouTube now—watch it before they take it down!

Video: Making No-Knead Bread

my 10th loaf

This one goes to Todd. I think I’m learning that having the correct water content is important to the final consistency of the bread’s insides. The crust in all cases has been pretty consistent. But an extra 1/8 cup of water can move it toward the too moist side of the spectrum. I’ve got another batch rising for cooking tomorrow.

my 8th loaf

Today I baked a round loaf of rustic bread. I feel like I’ve finally worked out a few of the kinks with Jim Lahey’s Sullivan Street Bakery no-knead recipe. Hopefully it tastes as good as it looks. I gave it to Josh for his family dinner tonight. My 7th loaf was delicious so I’m predicting good times for the Petersens tonight.

I plan to bake a couple more loafs tonight to give to people.

Ratchet Dog Spring

Thanks to David at Choo-Choo I know how to make the soda machine dispense bottles for free. There’s a solenoid that’s tripped everytime the correct change is deposited. This flips the rachet dog which is held in place by the rachet dog spring. I simply have to remove the bottom three shelves then remove the rachet dog spring and it should release the rachet dog locking mechanism permanently. Translation: free bottles of whatever will now be dispensed (fingers crossed).

Track my running (read all 6 entries…)
last run of 2006

I ran today and thought I’d start a new entry for tracking my running in 2007. In 2006 I didn’t start tracking my running until July. Things went well until November when I pretty much gave up. I made a modest effort to get back on the horse in December, but those months are always very tough for me. And I had a back injury in November which prevented me from running for 2 weeks.

reinvent my keyboard rig (read all 2 entries…)
ongoing

I’m trying to further simplify the keyboard rig I’ve been simplifying for years. This newest push is a big shift for me. I’ve sold off a ton of gear and I think my new rig will look something like:

  • Nord Stage 88
  • Access Polar TI
  • Speakeasy leslie preamp pedal
  • Leslie 122
  • Fender Hot Rod tube amp

Techie for sure, but it’s a lot smaller rig than I’m used to. I’m excited about getting this down to something I can actually transport on my own. And most of all I want it to be fun again—something I don’t have to spend too much time maintaining.

Note to self about what I need to sell off:

  • Speakeasy B3/Rhodes preamp
  • Barbetta speaker
  • Virus KC
  • odd n’ ends

Coming soon: Flag A User. You’ll be able to flag users from their profile page and categorize their offense (spam, prohibited content, other). No more searching for this goal to do a good deed for the sites. Power to the people!

recording in my basement

I’m not sure that “really heavy” will be the end result of my recent guitar playing but I’m tying this goal to it. My friend Michael has a studio and has offered his protools rig for my basement recording—basically I can borrow his gear for two weeks of tracking bass, guitar and drums. Hopefully this will happen in late January. Once that’s complete I think I’ll be able to check this long lasting goal off my list.

hidden treasures

I found a container of old bottle caps ine th soda machine: Tab, Coca Cola, Fanta Root Beer, Fanta Orange and Sprite. And some burned out light bulbs that I’ll replace. I learned that applying old vinyl in the cold (about 40F today) is a bad idea. Lot’s of splitting, but I think it still may work.

The good news is that the cooling system seems to work flawlessly. I think this is simply a clean-up job at this point.

key and vinyl arrived

Choo Choo Vending mailed me a spare key and a scrap of presidential vinyl to replace the worn wood panel vinyl that is peeling off the front of the machine. The key worked! No bottles or change in the machine, but the motor hums when plugged in and it looks like it’ll hold bottles nicely. I’ll have to see what size works.

The new vinyl they sent is not wood grained. It’s kind of a 60s tweed which may be very cool or very odd. It is presidential, so I’m hoping for goodness.

run a 10k this fall (read all 3 entries…)
Upcoming 10ks in Seattle?

I was reviewing my list this morning and wondered why I don’t take this overdue “run a 10k” off my list. I’ve run a half marathon, a 5k and plenty of normal daily running. But never a 10k race. It’s not for the race aspect, but more because I think that 10k is going to feel like the right distance to run. When I run on my own I’m happiest in the 5-7 mile range.

Does anyone know when the next 10k is in the Seattle area? I’ve completely fallen off my running routine in the wettest Seattle month in history (not to mention snow and ice).

postponed

Talked to Ellis this week. He just finished up a buch of paintings for a submission or a show (not sure which) in the Bay Area and that took a lot of his attention. Plus he’s having a baby boy soon. And he was completely satisfied with the final state of my painting so he’s going to hold onto it for another round of output. Which is just fine by me as I want his best effort on my living room wall.

That’s always a funny puzzle with paintings or songs or websites—deciding when they’re ready to be released into the wild.

Choo Choo Vending

I talked to the folks at Choo Choo Vending in Chattanooga. They have a key for the lock which they’re sending me. They even had some extra “presidential vinyl” lying around so they’re going to throw in a square of that to make the front wood-grained panel look crisp and new. Once I get the key I can open it up and see if it works.

live within 80% of my income (read all 2 entries…)
it's mostly my 401k

My 20% goes to the 401k and I’m saving a tiny bit more the last few months so I’ll consider it done for now. If I buy a car in the future it’ll bring my expenses over 80% of my income. Now I’m thinking about continuing to micro-save for the unexpected expenses that inevitably come about every other month.

I give it 60/40 odds working out

That’s a 60% chance that we can revive this vending machine found abandoned in a parking lot down the street. Eric is going to help out. Our goal is to get it cleaned up and working so we can donate it to McLeod for the member’s room.

Buster is giving us until New Years Eve to get it going. If anyone else is interested in helping and knows something about refrigeration or old vending machines jump on in. It’s currently in my garage.
