Forget it, life is to short to keep banging my head on this goal. I am mediocre…next.

I’m making great strides here but still hang onto a former boss and problems in school. This is a lifetime challenge that one never finishes I guess.

be prepared for disaster
$50 a month for five years but finally achieved 20 months ago

It took forever but I have now accomplished this goal.

Don’t be fooled by this list of equipment/supplies. The most important part of being prepared for disaster is getting your head straight (why survive?), being in good shape/health and learning the skills (first aid, emergency training, electronics and survival) first. Only then should you consider anything more than the bare 72-hour emergency supplies.

This has been a life changing event. I live on a small salary but have my weekends and evenings free so I worked on the skills while I saved. I would love to tell you I am an accomplished hunter and have more than camping/hiking skills but the truth is I live in a large city but one does what they can.

Here is how I spent my money:

First Aid/Emergency: $200 worth of emergency supplies for each car (72-hour two person kits plus select accessories) and $300 on family emergency kit plus below.

Food & Water: Katadyn water filters $185 each plus $150 for replacement filters. $475 for 3-months of freeze dried food and 30-days bottled water.

Power & Communication: $250 folding solar panel to power $225 Xantrex Portable Powerpack that will power/charge cell, $220 NOAA radio, $125 radio scanner, rechargeable batteries for NovaTac LED Flashlights and can also jump the cars.

Shelter & Cooking: Nearly $1,200 in camping supplies (tents, backpacks, cooking/utensils, boots and clothing, tools and miscellaneous) all ready in the hallway closet for grab and go or shelter in place.

Conclusions

Ready for the end of the world or war, no. Ready for natural disaster or civil unrest, yes. Terrorism, what can I say no one is prepared for that eventuality unless you are dedicating every non-working hour and money to survivalism. Those dedicated survivalist who are living deep in the woods with guns and ammo to outlast the apocalypse scare me honestly. What is there to live for?

The are other things I’m not listing, for obvious reasons, but you can guess what those are and budget appropriately.

Now I am dedicating this money to having six-months of emergency savings. I camp, exercise and add new skills as possible but must admit that my peace of mind is more important than being the last man alive.

See ya’ in a few more years, lol.
