How I did it: Buy a waterproof pen and blank (no lines) journal. Pick a time and place when you have 10-15 minutes (lunch? dinner?) Draw whatever you see out the window, on the table in front of you, or a picture on the internet. Add color with watercolor wash or colored pencils Read how I did it…
How I did it: 1) create the outline2) create the videos of the class instructions3) set up a secure site4) invite participants5) release the content each week Read how I did it…
How I did it: I switched from a lined journal to a blank journal. I bought a blank A5 (about 6x8) flexible black leather book. It was about $15. The paper is thick enough that the ink doesn't bleed through and will take light watercolor washes.I simply draw whatever is in front of me at the moment. It might be a cup of coffee or a piece of fruit sitting on the counter. Whatever. I don't scout around for a better view of so… Read how I did it…

I started my illustrated journal this year. I actually started this in the end of 2007 but this year tried to do a sketch a day to accompany my writings.
I really love this technique and will continue it in 2009. There is just something very appealing to me when I see sketches in a book accompanied by journal writing. I love to go back through the book for the year and remember the people, sounds, and images. Writing and sketching help bring it all back to me.
Here’s my 2008 illustrated journal of selected pages.
You can read more about the illustrated journal and their associated images here.
Many ask what pen I use and what book I like. It really doesn’t matter but . . . here’s my reply to one of the readers of my blog blank journal and pen selection.
