The past few days have been surreal. I completed my VCP training last week and following that decided it was time to make my travel arrangements. While talking to a friendly barista at a bookstore in Peoria she suggested I check out Amtrak. Brilliant! What a fantastic way to arrive in the city, 30 hours split across two trains sliding across our great nation!
The past few months have been great, I stayed with friends in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. Thankfully I was able to catch up with great people that the rigors of working life had kept distant. Following that I spent January in Illinois visiting family in the Midwest and learning all over again what it meant to live in a place with four seasons.
I have a hostel for a week; hopefully that will allow me enough time to check out potential residences while I get my bearings.

The time has come, the time has come, to get away from Austin.
Ahh, dearest Austin. My sweet city on the Colorado. We’ve had our ups and downs, but you’ll always be my ‘home’.

My wonderful employer terminated me a week before I was supposed to be vacationing in New York City. The airfare and other arrangements had already been made, so I decided to continue on with my plans. Last week was phenomenal; we watched the election in times square, saw a taping of the daily show and checked out some excellent museums. But the most fun I had was just riding the subway and absorbing the sites and sounds around me.
It’s always been a dream to live there and my plans to move there have been dashed before. Now however, I don’t have a high-paying job or a girlfriend to tie me down. My family thinks it’s a bit rash, but they support me moving.
So, now I’m taking a break from selling all of my belongings on Craigslist. Once I’m done with my household stuff, the final thing to go on sale will be my car. I’m intending to only keep my Texas ‘winter clothes’, a few pairs of shorts, the notable t-shirts acquired through my various life events and my cooking gear. (because I’m particularly fond of it)
The only thing I don’t have hammered down is when I will leave. Being so close to the holidays, my mother would like me to wait till after Christmas. However, I’m thinking about moving immediately following Thanksgiving.
