I try. People don't return it.

I live in Chicago. A very dense, but socially isolated place. On the train, on buses, if you try and make eye contact with people, they go out of their way to avoid making eye contact with anyone. I grew up in the south where it’s normal to make eye contact and smile at strangers, but up here, thanks to there being so many weirdos, everyone keeps their eyes down, reads, listens to their iPods, and don’t talk to anyone. It’s really depressing and affects me after awhile. It’s like constantly reaching out to people and never getting anything back in return. It’s sad.
