Getting a Workable blog using Wordpress 2 years ago

It would seem that most sucessful blogs are sites that are more than the stock software that comes with Wordpress, Typepad, or Blogger etc. I am curious to know how much xhtml and or css is required to get this functionality before I move over to a hosted site. I am curretnly using both Typepad and Wordpress but leaning towards Wordpress.
