moved to austin, tx in august 2009. the city’s bike trails, infrastructure (bike lanes, bike laws), and cycling community made it easy for me to choose bike commuting over taking the bus, walking, or driving. it’s not only fun and healthful, but cheaper than maintaining a car and doesn’t leave a carbon footprint.
in short, i lost about 15lbs and gained muscle. i became confident in my body, and started pushing myself to ride faster, harder, and farther.
i’m in love with my bike, and how riding makes me feel, physically and mentally. i recommend bike commuting to everyone considering it, and even to those who aren’t.

How I did it: gathered a couple old classmates and set aside a date to visit our old teachers around lunch break. reminisced with friends before and after. the teachers really enjoyed seeing old students. Read how I did it…
How I did it: bought a train ticket on a whim, headed for indianapolis. took a bus from indianapolis to independence, kansas. drove with a friend to oklahoma city, then dallas. friend from dallas drove me to austin, tx. taking a bus from dallas to grand rapids, michigan just in time for christmas. rode my first tall bike at punk week IX. i was a little nervous at first since it was a triple stack, brakeless, and i wouldn’t be pedaling (the chain broke the day before). made good friends with my tandem buddy, cliff. he put me at ease with his confidence in my abilities. had a great time, but we definitely hit a few branches on the ride!
