I’ve long wanted to grow my own vegetables, not only for my own health, but to gain a greater understanding of where my food comes from. I enjoy eating food that I know is grown organically and picked fresh. We’ve all been brought up to expect fruits and vegetables to arrive to our stores from all over the world regardless of the local season, so vegetable gardening really is a way for me to connect with the natural rhythms of nature and to recognize the artificial world humans have created for themselves.
This year I experimented to see what I could grow. I am growing carrots, celery, tomatoes, lettuce, squash, melons, potatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, beans, shell peas, strawberries and herbs this year. With the experience I’ve gained, next year I can plant in a way that provides me with enough food to save money on groceries in 2010. This has been a great experience!
