There used to be times when I would lose countless hours in my day watching one program after another, trying to keep my mind occupied. It does leave you with a rather empty feeling. There is no sense of accomplishment, either, which is something I realize I need in life. While I still have a television in my room, for the past 5 years it gets no signal anymore, made sure of that. XD
Its only purpose now is for videogaming, which I sparingly do now for the same reason (I’d be sucked in for a week or more, doing almost nothing but trying to finish this game).
I also had to live away from it for about 2 years, that helped spurn my interest. And whenever I hear my friends say, Did you see lost last night? Did you see CSI? DID YOU SEE AMERICAN IDOL??
I can grin and say, NO. And I don’t care. I was doing something better with my time. :) I wasn’t watching other people live their lives or enact something, I was doing something else. Like.. trying to improve my own life, which needs improving. I started to think about it; why constantly watch other people have fun and go through dilemmas when you can go out and have your own fun, and surely have your own dilemmas? Ugh, too many dilemmas…
My boyfriend now has a bad TV habit. It seems not so severe since I spend time with him, but because of it I will once in a blue moon watch some TV, usually like history or travel channel. It isn’t so bad, since its something that can fill me up in one sitting and I can say goodbye to, and it’s not going to say, “COME BACK!! COME BACK AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!”
I want to say that figuratively, but it’s quite literal don’t you agree?
Anyway, I’ve become very detached from it and after a while you start to think of TV as silly. I think going cold turkey for a while will help you temper your usage later on, too.
Goodluck!
