i would be pleased to complete this before or after there is a regime change in Tehran, although it probably would be riskier – and more exciting? – if it were completed before there is a new government. visas to iran are not impossbile, and plenty of adventuresome journalists have described the iranian underworld. i have no doubt that there’s shiraz being consumed in shiraz. not speaking a word of farsi would make the goal more of a challenge, but not impossible.

its the highest peak in south america – maybe the summer hemisphere, too – but there’s little advanced equipment that’s needed to reach the peak. i’ve heard that over the summer, its possible to walk right up to the summit (with substantial time to readjust to the altitude). also, its near mendoza, argentina, which is a great town to spend some time in preparing for the hike.

being strapped to someone else when you jump out of the airplane takes away some of the thrill. its not as momentous when you actually leave the plane, because its not entirely your own volition. although the instructor did let me take my time until i was ready.
