i lived in indonesia for 3 years when i was a child, and then moved here to singapore where i studied malay. i am now almost 18 and my malay is terrible. its such a waste, and so i want to improve so i can go back to indonesia and converse without insulting anyone, starting a racial riot or embarrassing myself. i also want to be more involved in starting an indonesian ministry in my church, so the language would definitely help.
during a church service one sunday my pastor came up to me while people were praying and asked me to pray for a lady who’d come for the first time. i was apprehensive, but i went and sat with her, and asked her name and if i could pray for her. i just said something simple, asked for guidance and healing in her life, and that she’d find peace, and just like that she started weeping and suddenly i felt a rush of affection for this strange sad person i didnt know, leaned forward and hugged her. i love these brief moments of intimacy with people you dont know, like how when you get caught in the rain while walking and you find yourself grinning sheepishly at the people that pass you by without awkwardness, because you both have something explicitly in common. strangers arent so strange, really.
