live in New York City
It's worth it, but to be honest, I'm ok with having already done it 3 years ago

It’s expensive! Unless you have cash to burn or can make 60k+, I would keep expectations to a minimum. Because if you’re making 40k, you’re gonna be renting or sharing in some iffy situations. But employers do tend to pay more in NY, so if you are making similar money elsewhere you will get more in NY. But if not, you’ll be living in small, dirty, share situations, long commutes on packed subway cars, bad landlords, bad neighbors, you name it. Also, the pace is INSANE. Take your city and speed it up 100x. I kind of enjoyed it, but it can be harrowing, especially if you don’t have a proper home to go back to and are living in a dump. If you do not appreciate diversity, do NOT move to NY. NY truly is the melting pot. Everything in NY is expensive and there is so much to do, it will cost you a lot of money to keep up with the entertainment/sports/clubbing/bars/activities/etc. You’ll find that everything you like will be in town, often all at once! The good side we all know, I just thought I’d throw caution to the wind. NY is not the same place it used to be and it changes so fast that you won’t recognize it in five years either. Constantly changing. So if you like a place where you can make friends and stay friends with people for long periods of time, NY isn’t for you. People come and go. Rich people are taking control of all the neighborhoods, so housing is becoming real tight in Manhattan and even in the other boroughs. But I would never give back the time I spent there and I occasionally look back on my time there and smile. I’m happy I did it and will treasure my time there forever. Yet, in my situation, I need to buy a house somewhere affordable, so I have to move on. Maybe I’ll be back someday, who knows? But as of now, I’m happy to have done it.
