After years of prodding from my comedian friends, I finally got on stage. It went ridiculously well, despite having paralyzing stage fright. I had a lot of things going for me, but I think the way I prepared was what made it a success. I started writing a few things a couple months prior. Committed to a date a month in advance. I wrote harder for the next 3 weeks, giving myself a writing deadline of 1 week prior to the show. The final week was all about memorization and final word tweaking. It felt weird rehearsing out loud, but I made myself do it whenever I could. The final few hours before the show, I just relaxed as much as I could, and didn’t look at my notes at all. I ran over them once more before I went up, but otherwise I just focused on CALM.
I think the most important thing was not worrying about the quality of the material as much as just delivering it properly. Your first time out isn’t supposed to go well, and you’re not supposed to be all that funny yet. Don’t put pressure on yourself. Even if I hadn’t gotten the laughs, I would have been proud of myself for just getting the delivery right.
And if you’re scared like me? Don’t bring friends. It’s easier to risk your dignity infront of complete strangers.
