It’s so simple. Whenever you meet someone, make sure to repeat their names a couple of times out loud, to the person. A clever person can do it in such a way that the person doesn’t realize it.
It’s truly embarrassing to call someone by another name, believe me I know. When I was in High School I was pretty bad about names, and when I couldn’t take it anymore, I started doing the name repetition. And it’s not only when I first meet the person, I say people’s names a lot. It’s called learning by repetition, and it’s the best tool in the world.
When ever I meet someone, I say: “Hello, _, it’s nice to meet you.” Then I find someway to slip their name into the conversation again. Maybe asking them, “So, _, what do you do for a living.” OR, “Wasn’t that a great football game, __.”
You can ask anyone who knows me, they’re pretty much sick of hearing their own names, but it’s become habit to call people by name, and at least I don’t call them by someone elses name.
It also helps to repeat their name five or six times in your head.
