When my microwave oven caught fire and blew up I decided not to replace it. Don’t miss it, everything is slow food now. Warm things up in a pan. Buy local. Use a clothesline when it isn’t raining. Recycle everything my county allows, buy less packaging. Don’t buy bottled water. Reuse junk mail envelopes to send notes, save seeds. Composting. Reusing plastic food containers for growing seedlings, making watering cans out of detergent bottles for school gardens. Use cloth shopping bags. Reduced my garbage by half. Plan errands to do the least amount of driving. Carpool. Switched to rechargeable batteries. Use an electric weed wacker. Garden organically. Testify against GMOs. Pick up orphan trash. Share knowledge about native plants. Participate in reforestation projects. Donate to environmental nonprofits. Vote for pro-environment candidates. Joined Freecycle and gave away stuff. Still thinking…

It’s a classic, it’s an icon of it’s time and food for thought for the future. Good to know that we are more enlightened, even though there is plenty more to do. REad it all, and you’ll be proud of yourself and ready to read more nature writing.
