i was in band (school programs) for 6 years. you may not think that’s anything to be proud of. but i grew up in Pflugerville, TX and we had very good music programs. band was the only thing i’ve ever stuck with for that long of a time other than getting my degree. there are few things that i consider being more fun or even as fun as playing in a musical ensemble. i would like to take classes or find a small band so i can do it again. it was always such a great experience for me to perform, be it on stage, competing, in a parade, or on a football field. it’s a feeling i’ll never let go of and want to have again.

jazz fest was pretty awesome. it was digustingly hot and humid, but the music and the food and the overall atmosphere was worth it. very different musical/social experience. i think i heard everything but jazz at the festival. big band, brass band, zydeco, rock, r&b. i was there for only a weekend and went out to the french quarter for one night. the street scene is great. and people just seem more interesting and inviting. i live in houston where there’s minimal street scene, so it was a good change. i definitely recommend jazz fest. new orleans seemed great for the one night i was there. i definitely want to go back.
there’s no khmer classes i can take (conveniently). and i was going to take japanese this summer, but that might not fall through. which gives me time to learn khmer. so, i’ll have to go back to teaching myself… which is very difficult and slow. anyone have any suggestions? any good software/ textbooks/ miscellaneous learning aids?
