I love rollercoasters and other scary rides.
Looking back, I think I really wanted to bungy jump more so that I could impress people and seem like an exciting person. This probably stemmed from some typical minor low self-esteem issues.
It wasn’t as fun as amusement park rides, where there’s that “we’re all in this together” feeling.
There was just me, a bungy, and possible death below.
It took me a few minutes to muster up the courage. I actually experienced the sensation of “sweating bullets” prior to the jump. It was a dry day in Nevada, and I felt like the sweat glands in my feet had dilated to the diameter of pencil erasers. It really felt that way!
Anyway, my “jump coach” Penelope coaxed me on by stating that “Sometimes in life, you just have to say ‘F@ck it’ and jump!”
So I did it!
The initial drop was nearly heart-stopping…there is no way to describe it. The subsequent bounces (4-5) were actually really fun. At that point, I knew I was going to live, so I shouted with glee!
A few minutes after the jump, I saw that I had broken capillaries in my forehead and eyes (could have been more serious, like a larger broken vessel). Also, my back and SI joints (near hips) were really sore.
The company I jumped with gave substantial discounts on future jumps. There’s a reason they do this…a high percentage of first-time jumpers won’t jump a second time! Some sort of 80-20 rule, except it’s probably more like 97-3.
The disappointing part was that when I told people about my jump, they were not all that impressed. The only people who seemed interested in my tale were those who were contemplating their own first bungy jump. Other people’s reactions were either “that’s nice,” “that’s crazy,” or “I’ve bungy jumped (skydived, hanglided, met a live tiger, whatever) and I’m a show-off too”
If you really want to jump, I suggest you evaluate your motivations. If you are really seeking the thrill, then just say “F@ck it” and jump! (just go with a realiable Bungy company please!)
But if you’re thinking of jumping to impress others, learn to love yourself more. If you’re true to yourself, you will find yourself surrounded by people who value you. You won’t feel that insecure “need to impress!”
Whatever your decision, best wishes with your 43 Things!
