Just wondering what everyone’s primary complaint is about life in L.A. Most people cite traffic, smog, crime, earthquakes, the cost of living, etc. but for me those were all kind of minor annoyances. What really made me want to leave was the people and the way of life. As Bebopr mentioned, I found that the constant environment of mean-spiritedness, rudeness, and self-absorption was changing me too, and I didn’t like that much.
I just drove across 3/4 of the country, and it really made me realize what a crappy place L.A. is.

I’m wondering if anyone has successfully eliminated the incredibly wasteful and (IMO) outdated ritual of gift exchanges? I think it’s a wonderful ritual for children, but as an adult, I just find it a wasteful nuisance. The truth is, if I need something, I probably already have it. I can’t get people to stop giving me gifts on special occasions (telling them, “don’t get me anything!!!” does NOT work,) and as a result, I’m obligated to get them something too. I just think the entire process is really wasteful.
For my birthday, I’d much rather have someone just take me out to dinner.
