a new translation by Aliki Barnstone. This is the first time I’ve read Cavafy and I must say the poems are hauntingly beautiful. Cavafy has the amazing facility to evoke a historical moment, distilling it down to a dreamy essence and leave you the reader standing in its presence to make of it what you will.

alley from me is working through the husband’s rehabilitation following a stroke. Yesterday I went over and volunteered to clear their sidewalks and driveway for as long as they wanted me to. Its an odd feature of my state that some folks positively love showblowing or shoveling snow. The husband is one of those happy people so in my offer I was careful to say, “until Norbert can get back at it.” Norbert’s wife got all choked up and agreed.

Wow what a great version! I have tried to read other versions all unsuccessfully for they were dull, bland, tedious or ornate. The Mitchell translation has none of these faults and is spellbinding.

A storm, a ship and its crew are the elements for Conrad’s exploration of the human psyche. Superb.

each time I’ve gone out. The only obstacle, other than the weather, is a feeling of nascent shin splints. I’m thinking that I may need to go every other day in order to give my shins a chance to recover.

A compelling work of cultural history wherin reknowned scientists pursue the questions of the paranormal. Excellent and in no way soft headed.

I finished this short, superb novel last night and found it haunted my dreams. This is a marvellous chilling tale that had me underlining and pondering like it was holy writ.

this week. Since the weather has turned I had to weigh-in wearing a full complement of warm clothing thus skewing my results. Looks like I held steady since last week. Maybe its the change of seasons but I am having a heck of hard time staying focused on working out. I hope this feeling passes….

All 1271 pages. Have you ever had the pleasure of listening to a charming, thoroughly engaging, learned conversationalist? If yes then you are understand the feeling engendered in reading Vidal’s essays. Without doubt Vidal is one of the fine essayists in the Anglosphere. To read Gore Vidal is to rediscover the pleasures of learning.

journey I rewarded myself with an Ipod. I’ve never had one so I’m blown away by it. I’ve been downloading Verdi arias. Yesterday I took the Ipod to the gym and used it while I cycled—what a world we live in! A world where you can workout to the glorious sound of timeless opera.

a one pound loss! One of the points of discussion brought up by our dietician was of the possible need to switch to a maintenance regime after losing weight for three to six months. This switch will allow you to become comfortable with your new weight, in essence setting a new set point for your body. The approach is very helpful to those who have felt deprived of calories as they lost weight. Since I don’t feel a sense of deprivation I think I will continue to eat in a manner to continue my weight loss. Hope this is a right decision!

I lost 4 pounds in the last week. Best of all though was the happy realization that I am just a single pound away from a major weight loss benchmark.
