I adopted Yolo-a normal grey cockatiel with a congenital foot deformation and Cody-a border collie with hip dysplasia—to keep my 90-year-old mom company. They brought her much pleasure in her final years. Yolo has since been adopted by my friend Manuela to keep her aging parents company and Cody was adopted by my mom’s neighbors across the street since they’d fallen in love with him while my Mom was still alive. I’m pleased to have been able to place these two animals in great homes. The photo is of Cody on the day we adopted him
