First year of college is over. I think I learned more about myself than friends, school, or college life. One of the things that I learned is that I’m going to have to put a lot more effort into my schoolwork if I really expect to be a doctor… so far my GPA is about a 2.5 for both of my first semesters. There’s a lot of work ahead of me, and I have to really excel in these advanced science courses if I expect medical schools to take my application seriously. I’ll work, spend money, and be introspective over the summer, but when I get back I’ll be prepared to tackle my schoolwork in a new way!

It’s been about a year now since I’ve decided to pursue a career to become a medical doctor of some sort, and I am still just as determined as I was when I first realized that was the best option for me. Although it’s far too early to actually decide what kind of field I’ll work in, I am leaning towards cardiovascular or cardiothoracic surgery more than anything else. This high-risk life-saving surgery is the kind that is falling in supply (of skill and manpower) and rising in demand.
This is one of my biggest goals that drives me to study hard in college every day for a better future.
I know young people are naive and hopeful, but I really believe that putting others first is the only real way to be happy. I started thinking this way as a Christian, and for four or five years I was steadfast in my decision to become a missionary. But after I graduated high school I changed. While I am no longer a Christian, I still believe that my own life will not be fulfilling if I don’t find a way to make it a better place for the children today and the generations to come. Just because I’m seventeen doesn’t mean I won’t follow through.
