A slow zombie I’d probably just avoid, but a fast zombie I’d kill if I could. I hate those fuckers.

I learned to knit from an incredibly intimidating German woman. She scared me badly enough that I dedicated my entire focus to learning, as having to go back and ask her to clarify anything was absolutely unthinkable. Now, knitting is to me what meditation or prayer is to a lot of people. While I am knitting, my hands are happily (and productively) occupied, while my little brain is free to digest whatever the last 24 hours have poured into it.
BEST BEGINNER TIP: Buy cheap yarn. Beyond saving your money, cheap yarn is usually pretty straitforward… no lumpiness or fuzz. This will help you to see the pattern of your stitches, which is rewarding! When you buy “gimmick” yarn (fuzz, glitter, etc.), the finished results tend to reflect the YARN, not what you did with it. I still use the cheapest yarn that is still soft for most of my projects, because that way they stand out because of the needlework, not the manufacturer’s additions. With fancy yarn, it doesn’t REALLY matter what kind of stitch you use, because the glitter/fuzz covers up the details. Save some money, demand more of yourself, and increase your satisfaction by keeping the ingredients SIMPLE.
FlyLady.net helps. A lot. Well, so far. We’ll see how the long term motivation pans out. I’m the kind of person who needs logs, schedules, plans, and MOST OF ALL… gold stars next to my name… FlyLady provides all of the above. If you’re the type who only needs a biscuit whenever you do a trick…
