It is hard to have a non-traditional wedding. Not so hard to have it I guess, but to get any help planning it. Everything leads you to the age old traditions that are much overdone and many outdated. We had a fabulous time at our wedding. We held the ceremony at a lighthouse near our home, which was owned by BLM. Our ceremony was short and held on the bluffs (in the morning). We followed this with some short tours of lighthouse, and trips to the top =) Then off to the cove about 4 miles down the road for kayaking and a BBQ. Everyone hung out at the beach or did their own thing in the afternoon, and then reconvened for pizza for dinner. It was a fabulous day, and relatively low impact. In addition, one of the things we put on our registry was a donation to Sierra Club, for which we had a few takers.

Joanne Simpson was the first woman to receive a PhD in Meteorology, discovered what drives hurricanes, continued many studies on weather modification and is NASA’s chief scientist in meteorology.

I am most excited about my invitations from twisted limb (www.twistedlimbpaper.com) which are all recycled and contain wildflower seeds that people can plant after they get them (plant the whole invite – so cool). Also, we made a honeymoon registry, in which people can contribute to our honeymoon experience, rather than getting us more stuff. That way we can register for things we actually want, not things we feel obligated to register for. Overall, looking forward to the whole event!

I keep extra bags in my car, so whenever I head to the store, there they are. The last 10 times I’ve been to the store, I have used them. When I get them inside, I put my car keys right next to them so I remember to take them back out to my car. I think this is incredibly important, and not too difficult and encourage everyone to give it a try!

Working on one for mom for next weekend. Some random things that should make her smile.

The first one, to a group of ladies in Mexico, who run a convenience store.
The second, to a woman running her own textile shop in Uganda.

I’ve been hearing so much, and thus thinking about living in the “now” and enjoying what you are doing. This has led me to look at what I want to do, what I admire, and what I would like to be a part of. All of that has led me to completing some type of scientific research. I am currently getting my masters in geosciences and that’s a start. I admire the knowledge that goes into current discoveries and the importance of the work being done. Most of all though, I see the excitement in it, similar to the excitement of early explorers, just in a different realm. Opening doors to greater understanding of the world around us.

I have now officially completed my second semester of my masters in geosciences program. While finding the time for my schoolwork went alright, the courses were much more challenging this semester, and reminded me how difficult school can be if you aren’t always understanding the content. It definitely gave me a new perspective on my own teaching. Next semester: climatology and ocean science. I’m still enjoying it an looking forward to it.

first semester – done! Just 5 more to go. It’s been busy, but not too bad. I’m actually impressed with how well it went. And I’m enjoying the information. wahoo!

Well my mini-herb garden is still alive! On the other hand, I have great fully given up the environmental studies class with the garden. I need more practice before I take on a project like that again!

This goal really isn’t that hard, but I haven’t done anything for it. Time to get rolling on it I think! Especially with all the natural disasters around the country right now. I’ve been lucky.

There are some great articles online about green weddings, starting with this one from the sierra club:

I fell in love with the idea of wedding invitations that have seeds embedded that you can plant. So you take the entire invitation and stick it in the ground and it grows plants! Genius! Here’s one company I found that does seeded paper and invitations.:

It’s a little late to be talking it up, but the Live Earth concerts yesterday were great. Concerts to prevent Global Warming and raise awareness took place on every continent and reached over 2 billion people. While the concerts are over, the website, www.liveearth.org has some great links and resources, some of which will be updated Tuesday, including carbon footprint quizzes, things you can do, climate news, etc. Check it out.

When I was in college, a group of friends and I went for a weekend to a cabin in the mountains somewhere. We didn’t have any trash service while we were there, so we tried to make as little trash as possible, recycling and composting what we could. After 3 or 4 days, with 6 or 8 people, we had about a half a bread bag filled with trash. A friend told me a story that reminded me of this this week. Why can’t we live our whole lives like that? Why can’t we bring those ideas home from vacation?

Sunday we are running a mountain bike clinic for our group of roadie friends. We started a club last year to help get kids into biking, but haven’t done much. We’ll get there, and making this one of my goals will help.

New job coming up! Teaching high school and directing ASB next year. I’m really looking forward to it (and I don’t remember really honestly looking forward to school for a while). Enjoying the remainder of my time with the little sixth graders. I wonder if I’ll even recognize them when I have some of them in my classes again in 3 years.

I picked it up last night, but didn’t read it. I’m still reading a little here and a little there, but it is a lot easier to stay in the mode – especially when I haven’t used any of my french in a long time, not that it was that good to begin with. Alright, it was alright. Now I’m rambling.

It is taking a lot of work these days to keep the negative, exhausting and hopeless thoughts and feelings out of my mind. It’s just apply, apply, apply and wait to hear back from someone jobs for next year. I think I’m driving my boyfriend crazy. Teaching is tough, let alone the energy required to apply for jobs (especially if some of the jobs you are applying for are at your own school!). I just keep telling myself that it is going to happen. I’m just not sure when or where. It will happen.
