I was named after a LOTR character and I still haven’t read them all the way through. Problem is, everyone assumes I love LOTR and have an expert level of information on them but it’s more my parents’ passion than my own—I didn’t name myself. My dad read me “The Hobbit” when I was in preschool and we always listened to the BBC version of the LOTR on our family roadtrips (parents are Tolkien fanatics obviously). Plus, with the movies, I have a cursory knowledge. I actually like the first book but I always lose steam halfway through. In the end, I feel obligated to read and MUST…someday.

Ironically, I live in my hometown but none of my family lives here anymore. They’ve all either died or moved away. It’s funny because it no longer even feels like “home,” though I’ve lived here for 21 of my 23 years. To top it all off, it’s not even an interesting city! The only reason I’m staying is to finish off my last year of college. One year left in this town. Go me! I can’t wait to find out what’s in the rest of the world and grow as a person.
I’d been squabbling with my best friend about the small, day-to-day stuff. Reflecting on the triviality of our arguments later that day, I decided to call her and tell her how much I loved her. A few seconds later, before I could pick up the phone, my friend’s mother called me. My friend was in a car accident that night, but she was okay. Nothing like that has ever happened to me before; it sent chills up and down my spine. We should all tell our loved ones how much we care before it’s too late.
