So last month I had this nagging feeling while sat there at work one Monday morning that there was something important I should be doing but I didn’t know what it was. After several hours searching my mind and every calander I could find, I eventually realised I’d booked a flight to go home for my fathers birthday six months before. During those six months, I’d already decided I wouldn’t be able to go due to work and money so had intended to postpone the visit, but forgot to do so.
So out of curiosity, I started checking prices for accomodation in England, travel, return airfare and realised that I could just about afford to go. So I asked work if I could take the time off and they said no. I was soooo disapointed since I’d built it up in my mind and convinced myself I was actually going home. So three days later after lots of negotiation with my boss, and several expensive changes to my plans, work said I could go! I was so delighted.
So I spent the next two days making phone calls to my family to find out all their plans for my fathers birthday only they didn’t know I was coming- none of them. I was sneaky enough to learn the hotel they were going to, the times they were going, everything.
So on the Friday I left the office and went to the airport, flew 5000 miles to England, got a train to my mothers house and knocked on the door. She was quite shocked to see me standing there and promptly asked “What are you doing here? Have you been sacked?”. I couldn’t help but laugh.
The following day I went to the hotel were my father was going to be staying and got the hotel staff to call me as soon as my father arrived. Although he didn’t turn up at the time he said he would, so I called him to see what was happening without trying to give the game away. He asked me what time it was in LA and I had to quickly look at my watch and work it out- “er…4:30am”. So I found out he should be arriving shortly. But 2 hours later there was still no sign, so I had to get my mother to find out what was going on. I think by this point, he must have had some suspician. Eventually he arrived and the staff told me so I went to his room and surprised him. He didn’t beleive it was me at first. Then it slowly sank in. He said it was the best birthday present ever.
I then got to surprise my brother and his financee too. It was lots of fun to surprise everyone and give my father a great birthday.
