The downside is that no one seems at all shy about offering their comments about your choice of swimwear or about…um…different parts of your body. You also get to hear your 70-something neighbor lady say, in a particularly creepy way, “Well what have we here?”

“My own deep fear is of quiet. Stillness. The dark spaces of my own brain. In between the firing synapses and lit gray matter, there’s something lurking that terrifies me or rather the lack of something. An emptiness, a deep void. If I’m ever still for long enough and quiet for long enough and think for long enough, something deep and sad and very old may find its way out of the unremembered shadows and into the light.”
