How I did it: This was a long journey, and I might not be the best to give advice. Motivation has been lacking in my case but hey I finally got there. Also, I don;t want to blame my supervisors but they sure didn't help. Procrastinating made it take longer than I wished. I learned about time management. Read how I did it…
I am actually doing this. I’d recommend the methods from the book Do it Tomorrow… from Mark Forster.
I have a little planner with one day on one page. At the end of each day I want to make a list of things to do tomorrow. Under this list I draw a red line, indicating that this is my list for today, no need adding more stuff. The idea is that if things do turn up during the day I have 4 options to decide from
- It is urgent, I need to do it immediately: do it now
- It is pretty urgent, I need to do it today: write it down, under the red line and do it today
- It is important, I need to do it but not today: write it down on tomorrow’s list and do it tomorrow (or the first possible day)
- It is not important, I don’t need to do this: don’t do this.
When I finish a task on my list I cross it off.
This whole system is not a second nature to me (yet), but I am trying to stick with it. I am also trying to write down all kinds of stuff. I jott down ideas and and thoughts about things to do and when I actually make my list, I take a look at those.
I try to make a list that is representative for one day of work and therefore I aim to complete the list every day.
So far, pretty good, I’ll keep you posted.
BTW Posting my lists here is kina fun and I like peeking at others’ lists, but maybe liking it too much…That’s why I won’t post my list here anymore, as every time I do that, instead of doing items from my list I spend too much time on 43things
But I am keeping this goal up for now
