I just realized that it’s been like a zillion years since I last was on holiday down south during March Break. Seriously. I think the last time might have been when I was in high school perhaps. By this time in March I’m heartily sick of the snow and cold and I think taking a sun break in the Caribbean would do wonders so I’m putting this on the list of things to do by next year.

Well the season is done. I’ll have to do some comparative analysis with performance metrics over last season to see if there was any improvement (i think there was) and I can mark this thing “done”. Preparations now begin for next season.

I don’t consider this a goal only for those for whom english is a second language. There are those of us born to this tongue who could definitly benefit from improving our use or choice of words – I know I certainly can. I find many times I have difficulty articulating an idea … maybe it’s time to start reading the Oxford dictionary.

to do everything that needs to be done. Between working a full-time job, freelancing on the side, being a wife and a mom, and trying to fit in exercise and training for competitions, I feel like I’m over-committed and my time overstretched. When things get too much I let my exercize/training time slide (which is not good if one wants to maintain a somewhat healthy level of activity). I’m tired of pushing a mental slider to determine what gets more of my attention at any given moment and I’m determined to embark on better scheduling and better time management. Now, I just have to figure out where to get started.

Well last season ended well and the upcoming season is close upon us. I’ve been invited to join the High Performance group this year which is going to mean a bucketload of training (omg- where am i gonna find time for this???) but I think it’ll be fun.
Goal setting is always tricky – you need to set achievable but challenging ones. I think my overall goal this year will be to place better in the final AFL rankings, and to place better in the open division of the tournaments. I’m usually in or near the top 8 but I’d like to get another open medal (or two ;) that will be quite challenging but I don’t think it’s too far out of reach. I’m going to really have to work on mental preparation skills and refine my technical skills to even hope to meet these goals.

I have a few. I had originally marked this goal as not worth it but as time has gone on I’ve found myself using gmail more and more. Features have been added and I find it getting quite useful. If you need an invite – I have a few, let me know your email address and I’ll send it along.

Bummer. With only one sunny day on this long weekend (can you freakin’ believe it) I chose to work on another goal and start landscaping the front yard instead of going to the beach. But I’ll only count this as a partially failed goal since my main reasons for this goal is to get outside and enjoy the day instead of being cooped up inside either catching up on housework or being at the mall buying junk i don’t really need. Yard work (although it’s work and not relaxation) is, at least, outside.

I’ve noticed that the flickr photos on my home page are not updating with current photos – anyone else notice this?

Saturday was a perfect day to go to the beach. Hot and sunny. We went to New River Beach which is about a 30 minute drive from home. It’s an ocean beach so you need to be aware of the tide tables if you want to have some beach to sit on ;) We went out just as the tide was turning so were able to spend a good 4 hours baking in the sun. Lovely!

It’s been so long since I actually composed written content that the skills are really rusty. I used to enjoy writing, now I find it a little frustrating. To be a better blogger I think you need to be a better writer and since being a better blogger is one of my goals, I’ll now turn my attention to improving my writing style.

I spent some time at a conference over the past few days discussing with a collegue the need for more than a technology conference in the Atlantic Provinces. Together, we agreed that the lack of a forum east of Montreal and north of Boston for brainshare between web professionals is somewhat frustrating. To this end, we will be working together to try and get something organized for next summer – stay tuned, detail will be coming as we sort them out.

Well I managed to get in a 9K run this afternoon – I’ll have to add the extra K to make it an even 10 next time. I added the length to the route without marking the distance – next time I’ll mark it out first. Next run – I’ll plan for Thursday.

I already try to make sure I get at least one 5k run in a week but I’d like to run more – what I’m undecided on is if I should run more times a week or run a longer course. More times might be harder to do since I also train 2 nights a week at the fencing hall, I’d probably end up running before going into the club if I wanted to make sure I had a couple of nights off. Anyway, I think I’m leaning towards running a longer course – maybe 7k twice a week. My goal is to increase endurance rather than work on speed.

There are some beaches that are good for laying in the sun, some for swimming and having fun, others still for walking the dog, collecting shells and rocks. Of the beaches I can choose from, surely I should be able to manage to get to one at least once a week.

Books, books and more books. I come from a family of readers and it seemed, growing up, that books were jammed into most available spaces in our home. I started reading at a very early age and books became like my favorite friends. Of course the early years went from Seuss to Miss Pickerel to Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew. And then my early teens were spent with Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. LeGuin, Asimov, Clarke and others of that genre. A brief foray into the horror novels and then one day I picked up the Lord of the Rings and a whole new world opened up for me. The world of action, adventure, heroes, good vs evil. It also seemed that there was much variety in this area at the time. From novels spun from mythologies (my favorites being the Celtic myths) to action/adventure novels, dragon novels, relationship novels, but lately the pickings have grown increasingly slim, the bookstore shelves being slowly crowded out by the Forgotton Realms and AD&D series.
So after a long friendship with fantasy novels, it seems like the well has run dry and not much truly original work is being done in this genre. Happily, I’ve rediscovered Science Fiction, and am trying out some bestseller/action/adventure type novels like Brimstone by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child , DaVinci Code by Dan Brown, and others.
Latest Books read:
Brimstone, Douglas Preston & Lincoln ChildPandemic, Daniel KallaDecipher, Stel Pavlou The Family Trade, Charles Stross
Currently reading:
Still Life with Crows, Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child Sethra Lavode, Steven Brust
Next on the List:
American Gods, Neil Gaiman

Finally, done with phase one which basically amounts to tweaking the look just a bit but mainly updates the foundation. Moving from MT2.x to MT3 and fixing all the features that I inadvertantly broke the first time as I was new to the system and kinda didn’t have a clue to the templates. Note to self – get full understanding of the templates systems before writing your own. D’oh.

The season’s over, I competed in 4 tournaments and I’m still hanging in there so I’m marking off this goal as done. Now to make plans for the next season.

(pun intended) Every spring it gets a little bit more depressing. My front yard badly needs some pizazz while the back yard is getting near the total write-off point. I think I’ll plan for the front yard first and the back yard will have to be on the back burner for a little bit longer. So, step 1 – make a plan.
