A good way to get the correct hip posture whilst doing a front split is to :
1 find a corner in your house where two walls meet.
2 get your back leg (left leg if ur doing a right split and vice versa for left) and put your knee in the very corner(where the walls meet the floor)
3 get your other leg and stretch it out into a split but with your back leg bent at a 90 degree angle.
you won’t be able to go down as far as usaul (probably) because this method forces you to get the correct posture in your hips. It should look like the pic on this web page, except doing it in a corner is much easier. http://gymnastics.about.com/od/trainingadvice/ss/frontsplit_6.htm
