I’ve been planning to do this since I was about 20, with various moments making it seem more like a possibility than others. Still, years down the road I find myself with quite a few failed attempts (money, people bailing, getting a job at the last minute) and no successful journey.
I’m not sure how soon I’ll actually get in a car and add my carbon footprint to the interstate, but I don’t want to lose sight of this particular goal as my head gets crowded with all sorts of other ambitions.

When the Emperor was Divine by Julie Otsuka
Was all right- quick read, interesting perspective, and some striking insights. But overall I didn’t feel any great connection with the characters or the situation.

The Barefoot Emperor: An Ethiopian Tragedy
by Philip Marsden
The story of the first emperor to unite the Ethiopian tribes (Emperor Tewodros II), insane, great… all the general characteristics of powerful political figures. Basically a diplomatic nightmare for Imperial Britain and for the hundreds of European hostages he kept to bribe the queen into an alliance.
Quite a good read. Despotism makes for some interesting anecdotes.
