I’ve noticed that many books from the early 1900s and earlier expect readers to not only understand tons of random Greek/Roman/historical/Biblical references, but also French, German, and Latin… It’s crazy nowadays, but back then it seems that that was just what being educated was.
So yeah, I’m reading this book right now (PARADE’S END by Ford Madox Ford) that has references in nearly every paragraph to something I have no idea about. I want to understand all that! It felt so awesome just to be able to identify something that was from a Milton poem. Wouldn’t it be nice to understand more than 25% of all those references? :)
When I can read another book like this and thoroughly understand all (or most of) those allusions, I’ll have accomplished this goal.
