I started racing with the Mouse this summer. They are an awesome group of guys (and girls) – very fun, laid back, but definitely committed.

21. Ride the Onion Valley Climb

This was an awesome ride. It was my first time up such a big climb and it was my longest ride yet, a good metric century. I parked in Terra Linda in front of the Bank of America at the Park and Ride and headed West up Lucas Valley road to Big Rock. Came down through Lucas Valley and then doubled back to San Geronimo. Over White Hill to Fairfax and then up Bolinas Rd to Alpine Dam and Ridgecrest to the East Peak of Mt. Tam. At times I felt great and hammered, other times I was hurting on the climbs. I started to bonk just before reaching the East Peak and I couldn’t get a good rhythm on the giant rollers on Ridgcrest, but I managed to get my legs back on the way to the peak. Here’s my BikeForums ride report.
I picked up a Tiagra FD, cassette, chain, and 105 shifters on eBay for all less than $200 and got some cables and cable cutters at the LBS and spent an afternoon putting everything together. It was a lot of fun, but took a lot longer than I though, especially since I did spend some time cleaning everything. Here’s my BikeForums thread detailing the upgrade, and a Flickr set of the photos.
