1. Taped cardboard to the bottom of her shoes, then let her slide down the driveway on her bike, stablizing herself with her skids (feet).
2. Removed the cardboard (actually it wore off), and she started down an incline in the road, frequently stablizing and slowing herself with her shoes.
3. Told her that when she was ready she should try putting her feet on the peddles.
4. Practiced until she rode the bike all the way down the hill, turned around, and rode all the way back.
5. Big high-fives and ice cream all the way around.

Does the 5-mile hike in White Sands count? It was 110, took 4 hours, and was completely exhilarating.

Tv-free for a little over a week, now. Try working a 13-hour night shift for a while—it’ll do wonders.

This is so freeing. I can’t believe the difference - it’s like a weight off my mind, heart, back, whatever. Even just having a credit card that we paid off every month tied us down so much, because we were constantly a month ahead of our income. Now, if the money isn’t in the bank, we don’t spend it. What a concept. Praise God. Yeah, that’s right - i invoked the G word ;]

Take lots - LOTS - of pictures.
Don’t tighten things down too tight.
Go slow.
Buy a gallon of carb cleaner and soak the carb parts with it in a paint bucket.
Don’t lose anything, especially the few tiny metal parts.

To a complete n00b on the subject (me), this page has been very helpful: http://www.orchidlady.com/pages/faq.html

My dear wife picked up an orchid for me from the local hardware store for a pittance. It’s a 4-inch pot, and as i’ve only been able to swiftly kill them in the past, i’ve got a couple questions:
1. Should i take it out of the plastic liner and put it directly in the clay pot, or leave the liner in the pot?
2. How often should i water it?
3. Any other tips?
It’s in a south-facing bathroom window right now, which i hear is a good place for them.

If you want your life to cease being your own, and start living for the world around you, have kids. Don’t wait until you’re ready, but just be ready to change.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? In the evangelical christian world, it’s verboten to bring anything like this up.

Check out the “Effective ” ... books. IMO, might be better. Also, “Rapid Development”. A must-read TOME on best practices. Believe it or not, Function Point estimation actually works.

Just need to get bike racks for the ceiling, but i consider this done! Hurrah! Not that it matters to anyone else, really. So i have no idea why i would post this in a public forum. Maybe i need a new goal, “stop airing my stupid things to do when it really doesn’t matter a flip to anyone else”

It’s the best part of coding… building an elegant design where things fit well together, and are properly abstracted so you can grasp larger concepts at once. Fun stuff. Good luck! (Bruce Eckel’s Thinking in Java is a good OO book… also check out Design Patterns. If you’re more familiar with Java, there are a bunch of DP books for Java instead of C++)

I think if i were single i’d prefer a very cool apartment and let someone else be responsible for everything. With a family, though, it’s perfection. You get to do whatever you want on at least the inside. Last month we tore up the carpet in one of the rooms and painted the floor. Try that in an apartment!

i said i’d do it before i was 30. looks like i’m shooting for 33 unless a couple of investments turn good. isn’t that great? using credit to gamble on the housing market so i can pay off the cards. ugh.
