I quit 3 weeks and 3 days ago. I started smoking at the age of 15 and before I quit I was smoking 30 cigarettes / day—more if I was out on the weekend.
I went to the doctor and got a prescription for Zyban (a mild antidepressant used to help with nicotine withdrawal). I really wanted to stop smoking as it was making me sick. Smoking was the first thing I did in the morning and the last thing I did all day. It ruled my life. Anyway, you take Zyban for a week while you’re still smoking (gives it time to take effect). Side effects I experienced were a bit of dizziness, forgetfulness and insomnia in the first 10 days or so – but these could also be put down to nicotine withdrawal. I stopped taking them two weeks into the treatment – you’re supposed to take them for 1-2 months. I feel much better now and still haven’t had a single puff.
I’ve quit for 2 months before with patches before but the Zyban was different.. I didn’t feel as edgy as before as it the nicotine is totally gone from your body.
While a day doesn’t go past where I don’t think about smoking, I know now that I don’t need to smoke, and the cravings are more and more subdued every day.
