We traveled northeast to Sanghkhlaburi by Thai public transportation this summer, and then wound south until we arrived at Bangkok again. There is still some real Thailand out there.

I’m looking for good books on this … or people in the mid-NJ area who feel like teaching someone. I have a fisherman’s sweater that’s gone to pieces, and it’s about time I figured out how to knit so I can make one for myself!
As Gertrude Stein put it, there’s no “there” there. I lived in L.A. for three years, and the only things I can recommend it for are the restaurants (mostly overpriced) and the nightlife (some of the bars had soul). But overall, I found it a profoundly alienating city that spent a lot of time pretending it wasn’t as lonely as it really is. If you do end up going, though, at least treat yourself to a piece of cake at Sweet Lady Jane on Melrose near La Cienega. Santa Monica is pretty, but if you’re looking for beach, you should head down the coast towards San Diego.
