How I did it: I didn't realize how often I lied until I really thought about it. But I lied a LOT. It took a while to catch myself in every lie and to stop, but it feels good to know that I am being honest all the time now. Read how I did it…
At this point in time I can tread water and do my own version of the backstroke. I always thought it would be nice to know how to do all the different strokes properly but I’ve decided that the important thing is that I can keep myself from drowning and I’m not going to worry about whether I can do a front crawl or whatever, or if I can beat a world record.
I enjoyed beauty school and I love my job cutting hair, but there were about 5,000 times I wanted to quit and go back to college. Make sure it’s what you really, really want to do. Because it costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time, and you’re going to have to work on people who are too cranky and cheap to go to a real hair salon. You’ve never lived until you’ve given an old man a pedicure, believe me. Staying cheerful while filing down 87-year-old toenails was how I knew this was what I really wanted to do. You are going to screw up someone’s hair, and they are going to freak out, and you are going to want to quit. You are going to have to work with stinky chemicals. Your feet will hurt. You will cut your fingers with your shears. Eighty percent of beauty school is hell. But it’s the other twenty percent that makes it all worth it. Once you figure out what you’re doing, it is awesome – IF, and only if it’s for you.
I got financial aid from the government and with the kind of loan I got they defer payment until six months after you graduate.
It is expensive, but you have to think of it like four years of college. It’s as much work as four years of college.
But is it worth it?
YES.
