Out along the “loneliest road in America” in the Lahontan Valley between the Black Rock Desert and Death Valley once stood a cottonwood. Over the last 30 years, people had come to throw shoes over its long sweeping branches. Along this lonely road, with very little to see but pastoral panoramas gone boring, visitors came and stopped, to view and maybe to pay tribute, sharing in and helping create a monument, art. I just read, just before the new year someone murdered the tree.

Upcoming and other event calendars like Eventful not only help publish, gain feedback and build momentum for events, but also invent whole new ways to build and use social capital. They help connect people with uncommon tastes, within and to nearby metropolises. They can even stimulate and feed back demand to launch new events.
By exporting their calendars not only in feed syndication formats, but also as data for graphical calendars, they lead in providing rich semantic Web services. Online event calendars have become very useful.
