How I did it: I try to recycle everything I can't compost or reuse/give away. I stopped buying heavily packaged goods, stopped using a space heater, stopped shopping for pointless, consumer luxury things, and tried to stop accumulating garbage. Being broke really helps.I made better food choices for meat, fish, poultry and dairy. I try and seasonally and locally. I make my own food. It requires time and planning, but it feels good. How I did it: For whatever reason, it has become easier for me to resist sugar. I have eliminated many grains and alcohol as well. I feel better on a sugarless, grain-free diet, and have lost 40 lbs in the last 5 years in part due to this.Now I can fit into smaller clothes, but I'm not as muscular as I was, for health reasons.
