I work for spay and save (an organization that helps low income families spay and neuter their pets) as a transporter. I knew that I would be called to transport animals to the vet to be spayed and neutered and occasionally anesthetized. I got a call yesterday from my boss and she told me to pick up a pregnant stray in a neighborhood that I walk my own dog through regularly. There is only one pregnant stray that I know of and it is my dogs play mate. This hurt. There was a family feeding her, but they would not claim her even though if they did we could abort the pregnancy, get her fixed, and she could live a happy life with their dogs (which she was doing already), but they would not claim her, so off I went with her to the vet. I didn’t think I was going to see it happen, but when I showed up the vet came out with his needle and chemicals, put the IV in her arm and injected the liquid death. I asked him how long it would take and he said 30 seconds. She started to lick her chops because of the chemical reaction and 10 seconds later she began to fall over, we caught her and laid her head down. I had my hand on her chest to feel her heart beat fade. I sensed that it had stopped. The Vet picked her up and moved her next to the trash and said to come in and fill out some paperwork, but i wanted to close her eyes. When I squatted down next to her to close her eyes I realized she wasn’t dead yet. She took two deep gasps for air and then the vet came out and put her in a trash bag. I filled out the paper work, went home and cried.
I cant stand knowing that I was responsible for her death, but it is a fact. Today has been rough.
