Shakespeare never meant these plays to be read. He didn’t bother to get most of them written down in his life time. Shakepseare is art from the time of LISTENING AND SEEING not SITTING AND READING. This art is from the time when life happened in space and in the mind. Most people could not read. In other words, transcendent experience happened by watching a play or in conversation or going to church or in real life. Shakespeare’s plays are not to be read but taken, subsumed and articulated in the NOW of real time, with other people around you, experiencing the play as well.

Reading is an alternate life that bears little relation to the affect in reality which was Shakespeare’s theatre. There is no suspention of belief. There is no compartmentalized faith; part for god, part for wife, part for money. Life had a continuity of faith and space that extented from the audience mind directly to the actors, from the faithful directly to god, with no artifice between. The manipulation of faith and belief comes after the ultimate artifice – the written word.

Don’t read Shakespeare – go and see a play.

Why? 2 years ago

I started the book. Its about a tennis academy. Education and I are in a battle at the end one will die. Either I will or I will become dictator and abolish education. I do not understand tennis. You whack a ball back unforth until one person fails to whack the ball. Like golf, it derives its motive from the restraint of failure. Once failure occurs the game can continue. It’s lonely. The book is 1000 pages long. Its about tennis and education. It seems to be be a collection of sort-of-neat science fiction ideas I have seen in other books.

It does seem compelling at times and so many people have liked it. I am hopeful. I just need a good reason to read it. There are good reasons not to.
