Because there’s a dire need for more food pantries. Local charities and churches here in the U.S. can’t keep up with demand. (Unfortunately, America’s “working poor” can work full-time, even 2 jobs, and due to the high cost of living, still not have enough to eat—I write this on the basis of stark cold reality.) Food pantries, on the whole, only allow one visit (for anywhere for 1 day to 1 week’s worth of food) per month…and some only once every two or three months (truth). Food stamp regs are tight and income limits are very, very strict, and many food stamp workers (but not all) quite nasty (think Gestapo tatics), or at best, jaded, overworked and uninterested…despite the radio propaganda ads, many people who need food stamps, may be as little as $1 over the limit (I persoanlly know a disabled single mom who is).
So, if I ever win the lottery, or get a REALLY good paying job, I’d start my own emergency food pantry, to fill in the gaps where other pantries can’t help someone. Plus, I’d have the experience to know exactly what to stock the pantry with…loads of people donate foods that require addional products (milk, eggs, butter, mayo),and lots of people don’t get that someone may not have these items or the money to buy them.)
