Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

- The Robots.

have curtains cleaned (read all 3 entries…)
such a silly thing!

I’ve been procrastinating about this for ages.
I havent had those curtains cleaned since the seamstress hang them 3.5 years ago.
I decided to just do it and get this over with.

use 43Things with GTD in mind (read all 6 entries…)
The multitude of things...

I want to get done is simply enormous.
I’ve tried the GTD system before, but my to-dos (wanna dos – oughtta dos – gotta dos) seem to be endless and overwhelm me.

So, I will be using this site a bit differently than I originally thought.

- My 43 things includes the things I am currently working on or want to start working on and are very important to me

- The I Give Up tab is for the things I want to do but not just yet. Maybe, someday, next year…

- As for the I’ve done … things tab, I want every single item on this list to be something I wanted badly, a thing that was meaningful, and life-changing or -defining. Even if it’s not obvious to others, I will know why.

June 10

I was so sluggish on Wednesday…
All I really completed was a project @work, involving data entry.
Boring and meaningless.
If I want to get one thing done, I oughtta shoot for something better.

take swimming lessons
making room

I want to do this again IF I ever go back to the pool.
I am currently subscribed to a gym that has no pool, so it makes little sense now.
Anyway, I know how to swim, I just wanted to get faster, and swimming with proper form seemed like the way to do it.
I have other stuff to focus on right now.

For the future:
The next action for this goal would be to get a pool membership!

1. Moved all winter clothes from the dining room area to the right closets/shelves.
2. Bought my new moleskine diary (July 09-December 10).

finish 24 books (or forever let them go) before 2009 is over (read all 7 entries…)
2. The Hobbit

I’ve been meaning to re-read the Hobbit for more than 5 years.

I decided to treat myself and do it during my 4-day hospital stay (post-operative recovery). Once again, it was a fascinating read.

A most wonderful keeper. And a GREAT translation into Greek.

cross over to the overweight (read all 4 entries…)
Does this mean I made it?

I weighed myself this morning, even though it’s not my “official” weigh-in day.
Although I felt light, I was quite astonished to see my weight at 86.1.
Yes – I actually made it!!! :)

computer work – transfer, rename and backup files
boring, but necessary

Swim with dolphins
making room

I’m removing this to make room for the things I can focus on right now.
A google search revealed to me that you cannot swim with dolphins in Greece – if you’re lucky, you can watch them.
This is definitely a maybe/someday goal.

1. Kindheit des Zaubebers - Herman Hesse

This was a charming little book, an “autobiagraphic fairy tale” that was published in a bilingual (German – Greek) edition in 1995, and which I bought back in 96 or 97.
The illustrations by Peter Weiss are nostalgic, and so is the text.
I read it all in one morning, and had a great time at it!
Definitely a keeper, and one I’d like to re-read someday!

walk the Samaria gorge again (read all 3 entries…)
making room

I’m removing this, as it’s not in my short-term plans.
I will re-consider it aorund spring 2010.

make good use of my gym subscription (read all 6 entries…)
HR

One of the good things about the gym is that cardio machines allow me to track my heart rate. I know that these readings are not accurate and I’d be better off with my own heart rate monitor (and eventually I WILL buy myself one), but this is a good place to start.
I’m getting a clear picture of what it’s like to exercise at the top of my “cardio” zone (and it’s much less intense that I thought).
This allows me to feel good about exercising at a much more relaxed level than most people around me, because it’s becoming clear that this is what my body needs.
