I took my lifeguarding certification course because I loved to swim. I hadn’t even thought about actually getting a job. Then one practically fell in my lap. About half-way through the summer, this 9-ish year old boy was taking the swim test. Half-way across the lake, he started yelling. “Help me! Help!” If he had stopped panicking, he would’ve been fine. But he didn’t. I had to jump in. His head hadn’t even gone under by the time I got to him, but if I hadn’t been there… he might not have had any future to look forward too.
