make a difference (read all 6 entries…)
How many ways... 2 days ago

...can you make a difference?

You can
- be a voice for the children around the world
- be a voice for animals who are abused
- stand up for discrimination and inequality
- help make poverty history
- work to save the environment from future destruction
- foster animals and children so they have better futures
- donate money to charities you believe in
- walk/run/volunteer/fundraise for charities you support
- help your family
- help your neighbors
- sponsor a child
- purchase only charity cards/gifts for any occasion
- walk your talk
- reuse, reduce, recycle, compost etc… live green
- be active in campaigns that generate the public and politics’ awareness. Eg. oxfam activists, wecansolveit.com or whomever you choose
- give to a wishing tree at Christmas or better yet, donate food to those that have none
- read to sick kids in hospital
- donate your time to the elderly so they can have entertainment or someone to talk to
- Write to members of the government to change laws, get them aware of what is going on, make a point
- Host awareness nights for free trade, international day of peace, etc.
... and boy could I keep going.

All the above, I have done.
All the above, I will keep doing.

This does make a difference but you know what I have found from experience? At the time it doesn’t feel like it because each time you do something it seems so small and insignificant compared to the larger problem. To me, this goal “Make a Difference” is very generic.

We should be looking at goals that are specific.

Anyone can “make a difference” for a minute, a day, a week… and yes that is better than nothing!! However can you donate a well for a community in Africa? Do you know how? How well do you research what you do? How involved are you in this “making a difference” business?

This is why I’m saying I’m done with this goal. I want to be more specific. More dedicated. Not just sugar coat a kind gesture or spread warm fuzzies.

I am here to make a difference. I have done so, but it’s a drop of water in a drought compared to what needs to be done in this world.

May we all “make a difference!” And may it be enough.

July Habit: Use eyeliner & mascara everyday (read all 2 entries…)
Amazingly Easy 2 days ago

I didn’t know this habit would be so easy to pick up. There are a few days when I don’t use anything, and I think that is a good thing, but that is also a conscious decision.

After setting this July Habit I am looking after myself far better. Amazingly so. I cannot believe how easy this transition has been.

Now I need to think of a Habit for August. Suggestions welcome! I’d like to thank everyone for their support also!

read 12 books in 2008 (read all 6 entries…)
#8 & #9 - Worth a read. 2 weeks ago

8. Uglies By Scott Westerfeld is regarded as a Young Adult Sci-Fi novel. Since it was recommended a thousand times over by many who had consumed Twilight, I gave it a read. It was easy reading but had enough of a story to keep me going and left me curious enough to read it’s sequel…

9. Pretties (book two) also by Scott Westerfeld, was far better to the point where I just didn’t want to put the book down and now I’m looking forward to the next novel. This is not a book you could launch into it without knowing the information in the first book. Most of this second book wouldn’t make sense if you had not read Uglies.

Both books have a definite basis in classics such as Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and a touch of Orwell’s 1984.

The thing I liked about these though was the way it shows you the past which is where humankind is now. This past is a great environmental lesson on how we use too much coal, cut down trees, animals became extinct and basically us “Rusties” destroy the world.

Another great thing these books do is make the reader question their individuality. In a world where you aim to look “Pretty” and everyone is the same and vacuous with it, the author turns our attention to eating disorders, personality features, stereotypes, and shows the theory that even if you are “pretty” it means nothing in the long run compared to who you are as a person and what you do with your life.

I thought those two points were well tied in, and despite the plot being borrowed a tad from Huxley/Orwell, it had a strong message for todays youth, who probably related far more to these than to the older novels. Actually I think I did too! ;)

3-4 stars depending on which book. Others of different ages and fans of Sci-Fi may rate it totally differently.
