become a teacher
Teaching is the hardest work you'll ever love

I am a teacher who has been on disability for almost four years. Here are some thoughts for teachers-to-be.
1. Do go into teaching for the love of children or teens, for the love of learning, and for the opportunity to make a difference in the world. Do everyone a favor, yourself included, and do not go into teaching because you want summers and holidays off, want the job security, think that the hours are short and/or think that teaching is easy. You will be seriuosly disapointed, and so will your students.
2. Take care of yourself. Teaching is a very demanding profession, but you must not compromise your health by staying up late at the time or overworking. Otherwise you will be at home sick a lot instead of teaching your students. You will be exposed to every “bug” out there, so wash your hands frequently or use a sanitizer. (No I am not germaphobic.) Pace yourself. Pl
3. Care about your students. Good relationships are the key to keeping discipline. Kids and teens come with built in insincerity meters, and they will work harder and go farther if they know that you believe in them and want the best for them. You will also get more satisfaction from your job.
4. Get help from experienced teachers. You will need a mentor or mentors long after you get your teaching qualifications. Maybe someone will share teaching plans or materials, special expertise or just a shoulder to cry on when you’ve had a rough day.
5. Expect some rough days. Students will test you, parents will challenge you, administers will want too much stinking paperwork, then give you too few supplies, and there will be times when you may feel inadequate and ineffective. Then you will need to…
5. Celebrate the little things. If the whole class brings you dandelions, if a low acheiver gets their first B or A, or when somebody actually says thank you and means it, rejoice!

So why, given all this, is it worthwhile to become a teacher? There is an immense pride and satisfaction in making a difference, one child at a time. Your life will feel more meaningful than you ever dreamed was possible. You will never stop learning. You will never have a dull day. Good Luck!
