there is an old french song that says, “on the bridge in Avignon, one dances”. this just seems like a horribly romantic idea to me.
however, i have just googled some information at http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/france/01avignon.htm, and i see that even walking on the St. Bénezet Bridge costs 4 euros.
oh, pooh. i hope there is not a dancing surcharge of some sort. i would also hope that for 4 euros, there is some kind of craptacular music blaring out of a tinny sound system somewhere and that someone hands me some champagne.
caravaggio is one of my favorite artists. i am a huge fan of renaissance painting, and his works never fail to amaze me. i love the lighting, and lack thereof.
after accidentally wandering into a church on a trip to Rome last fall which held two of his paintings, i decided that it would be a life’s mission to see them all. having already “done” the louvre a few years ago, and with the addition of the trip to rome and florence, i have so far covered 11 of the nearly 60 paintings i can discern may exist.
i attempted to see another this weekend in detroit, as a side trip during an unrelated jaunt to Ann Arbor. however, the DIA is undergoing renovation, and although they had most of their collection on display, they had secreted poor “Martha & Magdelene” in a closet somewhere. how dare they! my darling husband even attempted to bribe a docent into sneaking us into said storage area, but they were not even sure it was on the grounds (i did, however, get to see “wedding dance” by brueghel and “the nightmare” by fuseli as consolation prizes).
detroit is only 6 hours from here, so i’ll be able to get back there once the painting is out of the garage or wherever they are keeping it. what is more challenging is another trip to rome, florence, and then milan and on and on.
the biggest challenge will be finding the one “Lute Player” that is held by a private collector. hopefully, it will either be on loan to an institution, or i can use the “6 degrees” to get a private showing.
if you know something about this, don’t let me down! LOL!
