Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

Been doing a mile or so a day

On the treadmill. Getting healthier! I am working on becoming healthy for the second half of my first 100 years!

138/89 - in the green

And it is probably lower – forgot to take the pre-running measurement – this was about 5 min after doing my mile on the treadmill. AND, am now consistently under 20 min for the mile mark. Today was 18:11! Could it be possible that at 50 something I will be running better mile times than when I was in high school? The goal is a 10 min mile and then to extend the distance.

Doing slightly over a mile 5 days a week

Since I just can’t seem to do on Mondays and Fridays, decided those would be my “take a break” day and that seems to be working out better. I can actually keep a schedule like this. And, sometimes I am motivated on Fridays, so I run that day, too. My mile is getting faster and the pounds are (VERY SLOWLY!) dropping off. The main thing is, however, that my BP is doing well! Yay for no BP meds in 2014!

Credit report...

Yeah, icky score. But I got a copy, and am facing the fiddler. I have a few old, paid debts that are still being reported, so, here I go, letter writing time. Pay off debt, be responsible with credit cards, take care of items on credit report. I am DOING it! No trying, no wishing, no wallowing in self-pity! One, small step at a time.

but I AM happy that very expensive emergency surgery saved my life… but it really is a bummer that it, combined with husband’s previous unemployment, caused so much financial distress!

Getting Finances in Order

My hubby’s report is OK, except that the Jr’s med bills are showing up there. Wrote letters to the creditors to make sure they are reporting on the correct person’s credit report. Should be an easy fix.

MY report, however, is just not going to look that good for a while. 1 – I co-signed all the kids’ student loans. 2 – I still have gobs of medical bills – that I am paying, but that have all gone to collections because we just couldn’t afford it at the time (but, being in debt is still better than not having emergency surgery and being dead!).

Really working hard to hopefully buy a place in 2014. Hoping, hoping, hoping!

Morning workout

Seasons cycle, and it's time to start anew

Been years since I put this goal on a shelf… and now I live 2200 miles away, far from the desert, and in the mid-south where it rains 50 or more inches a year. Where the forest tries to move in any time there is a patch of abandoned land… or even just an unmown lawn! So I am very excited that, perhaps in a year or two, I will be able to begin planing and nurturing a forest, at last. But not just any old forest… I have been reading about food forests and hugelkulture (sp?) and permaculture. I will for sure be planting trees – but I will also be gathering seeds. So wonderful to pull this goal off of the back burner and bring it back into the light!

Peaches are mostly self-fertile, so are more likely to come true or close to true from seed (as opposed to, say, apples, that usually MUST cross pollinate with some other type of apple, so you are guaranteed to get a seed unlike either parent). So, snagged a dozen or so peach pits from a haul of luscious peaches prom the farmers market last summer. Hope they will stay viable and safe in their pits until I have some land to plant them on. Plan to gather more this coming season. If I plant a hundred peach pits, statistically speaking, SOME should grow, and a FEW should bear yummy peaches (as opposed to just ok or even yucky peaches).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Alas, no venison, but I sat in the 16*F pre-dawn air, adorned in Mossy Oak, rifle ready, with my husband a 1/4 mile down the way from me. Spent the day in the open air. I’m pretty sure I am hooked now.
