I’ve recently become aware of the possibility that my procrastination isn’t due to laziness, but its opposite—I take on so much work that I have to just not-do things in order to claim some time for myself.
The other day, I mentioned to a coworker that I had to go home and do some freelance work in the evening, and he said “oh, I’d never do that. my time is my time.” that’s an attitude that has honestly never occurred to me before. BUT by procrastinating, that’s essentially what I’m doing: carving out me-time in the midst of my overscheduled life. I think the key to cracking the procrastination problem is to schedule and manage my responsibilities and my workload better, and understand that I have to build in some me-time and that it has to be sacrosanct. It’s just as important as everything else I have to do.
