Traditional Buddhist Malas have 108 beads. Muslim beads have 99, so the owner can recite the 99 names of G*d. Some people use Chakra beads which are strung in the order of the colours of the Chakras. I bought my first set of beads in October. I did not like the cheap tassel that came on it, so I removed it and added a luxurious new one. Now I am collecting special beads to make a 108 bead Mala to use during meditation. There are many wonderful sites on the ‘net about Malas, their history and uses.
