I very much believe in the usefulness of open source, and for a while now, I have been thinking about how I can give something back to the community. Unfortunately, my programming skills are sufficient for small tasks, but not enough to write something significant that is useful to somebody. (See my Perl and Java goals…)
Nonetheless, I have found a way how I can give something back: I figured out a program that would be useful to me and to a couple of other people. It’s something that I could write on my own, but that I do not have the time to do. So I am paying a programmer to write the first version, and from then one I will maintain it myself. I guess there’s a bit of cheating by having somebody else do the initial programming – but I think I can live with it. :-)
I really like the idea of IF, but I don’t have any stories inside me that are waiting to be told. Fortunately, I met this really great person who has published novels and we want to do a short-story using IF sometime in the early fall. I am so looking forward to this!
